What Should You Wear for Branding Photos?
You’ve booked your branding photoshoot. Now comes the question we hear all the time:
“What the heck am I supposed to wear?”
First — don’t overthink it.
Your branding photos should look like you, not like you borrowed someone else’s wardrobe for the day. What you wear should make sense for your business, your personality and how you actually want customers to see you.
At Dynasty Media, we photograph business owners, teams and brands throughout Langley and the Fraser Valley, and one of the biggest things we’ve learned is that the best branding photos happen when you actually feel comfortable in front of the camera.
Here’s what we recommend.
Start With Your Brand
Before picking an outfit, think about your actual brand.
Are you polished and corporate? Creative and colourful? Rugged and outdoorsy? Casual and approachable?
Your outfit should make sense beside your website, logo, social media and the type of customers you want to attract.
A lawyer and an off-road shop owner probably shouldn't show up wearing the same thing — and that's exactly the point.
Personal branding photography isn't about making everyone look "professional" in the same way. It's about making your business look like your business.
Wear Something You'd Actually Wear
This is probably our biggest piece of advice.
If you never wear a blazer, you don't suddenly need one because you're having professional photos taken.
If your customers normally see you in jeans, boots and a branded shirt, there is absolutely nothing wrong with showing up that way.
You want someone who follows you online to eventually meet you in person and think:
"Yep. That's exactly who I expected."
Authenticity photographs better than trying to look like somebody you're not.
Bring More Than One Outfit
If your branding session allows for outfit changes, take advantage of it.
We usually recommend bringing a few different options so you can create different looks from one photoshoot.
For example:
Look 1 — Your Everyday Brand
What would customers normally see you wearing?
Look 2 — Elevated
Something slightly more polished for your website, LinkedIn, advertisements or professional profiles.
Look 3 — Personality
Something more relaxed, colourful or unique that shows a little more of who you are outside of the traditional business photos.
This gives you a much larger variety of content to use throughout your website and social media.
Think About Your Brand Colours
You don't necessarily have to wear your exact logo colours.
In fact, sometimes that's a little too much.
Instead, think about colours that complement your branding.
If your website is mostly neutral, an outfit with a little colour can stand out beautifully.
If your branding is already bold and colourful, neutral clothing might help keep the focus on you.
We also think about where your photos are going to be used. If we're shooting images specifically for your website, we can plan clothing, backgrounds and compositions around the actual design of the site.
That's one of the advantages of approaching branding photography as part of your overall marketing rather than treating it like a regular portrait session.
Avoid Distracting Patterns
You don't have to wear solid colours for every photo, but extremely busy patterns can sometimes take attention away from your face.
Be careful with:
Very small stripes or checks
Extremely busy patterns
Huge logos that aren't your own
Clothing with distracting text
Anything you're constantly adjusting or uncomfortable wearing
That doesn't mean everything has to be beige.
Please don't show up looking like a Pinterest mood board if that's not your personality.
Colour, texture, denim, leather, workwear and accessories can all look amazing when they make sense for your brand.
Don't Forget the Details
The little things show up in professional photography.
Before your session, take a quick look at:
Shoes, jewelry, watches, belts, nails, glasses and any other accessories you'll be wearing.
Again, they don't have to be perfect.
They just need to feel intentional.
If You Have Branded Apparel — Bring It
Own a business with branded shirts, hoodies, hats or jackets?
Bring them.
We can capture some traditional branding portraits and then switch into your company apparel for more casual social media and website content.
For trades, automotive businesses and other hands-on industries, branded workwear can actually make some of the strongest photos from the entire session.
Your customers want to see the person they'll actually be dealing with.
Think Beyond Headshots
A branding photoshoot shouldn't just give you 30 versions of yourself smiling at the camera.
We want variety.
That might mean photographing you:
Working at your desk.
Talking with a customer.
Using your tools.
Making a product.
Walking through your shop.
Working on a laptop.
Having coffee.
Driving.
Creating.
Laughing.
Or doing whatever actually happens behind the scenes of your business.
What you're wearing needs to work for those situations too.
Dress for Your Industry
There isn't one correct branding-photo outfit.
A real estate agent might want polished lifestyle images.
A mechanic might look best in branded workwear inside the shop.
A hairstylist might want something stylish and expressive.
A contractor may want clean workwear on an active job site.
A restaurant owner might be photographed in the kitchen.
That's why we don't believe every branding session should look the same.
Your industry is part of the story.
What About Hair and Makeup?
Again — think about how you normally look.
Professional hair and makeup can be amazing if you want the experience and a more polished look, but it isn't mandatory.
If you normally wear minimal makeup, you don't need to suddenly look completely different for your branding photos.
The goal is usually to look like your best version of yourself, not a different person.
Still Have No Idea What to Wear?
That's okay.
Send us photos.
Seriously.
Before a branding session, we're happy to help you narrow down outfits and talk through what will photograph well based on your location, brand and the type of content we're creating.
Branding photography is about more than showing up with a camera. We want to understand where the photos are going, what you're trying to communicate and how they'll fit into your overall brand.
